Bernard D. Gilkey, Middleport, went to be with the Lord on February 1, 2010. He was born November 8, 1926, at Wolf Pen,Pomeroy, OH. He was the son of the late "Bernie" and Jane Gilkey of Middleport. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother,Guy Gilkey. He is survived by: one sister: Helen (Charles) Byer, Baltimore, OH; two sons: Richard (Karen) Gilkey, Middleport, OH; Mark (Debbie) Gilkey, Crofton, MD; one daughter: Debra (Sam) Boston, Letart, WV; Six grandchildren: Paula (Ryan) Hall, Lancaster, OH; Christi (Mike) Roush, Middleport; Debra (Kevin) Ely, Granville, IL; Richie (Julie) Gilkey, Mason, WV; Billie Jo (Terry) Milby, Granville, IL; Christopher Gilkey, Crofton,MD; nine great grandchildren; two nephews; Special Friend, Delores Surface, Middleport. Bernard was a life long resident of Meigs County, serving many different offices. He served 2 years as Meigs County Commissioner, 2 1/2 years on the Meigs County Election Board, 17 years as Trustee for Scipio and Salisbury Townships, 8 years as Meigs County Republican Central Committee, 5 years Meigs ODOT Superintendent, 2 years with the Meigs County Highway Dept., 5 years with the Village of Middleport and Meigs County Litter Control. In all a total of 41 years of public service. He was an Army Veteran of World War II and Korean Conflict, serving from 1944-1946 overseas. He was a member of American Legion-Feeney Bennet Post 128 and VFW Mason Post 9926. He returned from his tour of duty to be married and raise a family with Betty Parsons Gilkey and start a trucking business that he owned and operated for 12 years before going into public service. He was a member of Ash Street Baptist Church and also attended the Heath United Methodist Church in Middleport. He will be sadly and dearly missed by family and friends. Service will be held at 11:00A.M. on Thursday, February 4, 2010, at Anderson McDaniel Funeral Home in Pomeroy. Officiating will be Pastor Brian Dunham and burial will be in Meigs Memory Gardens. Military honors will be presented by American Legion, Feeney Bennett Post 128.
